The organising committee and all the Xenopus researchers based at Portsmouth can’t wait to welcome you (finally, the last conference scheduled here ended up virtual due to covid) to our city on an island on the South Coast of England. Portsmouth was the birthplace of Lancelot Hogben, who pioneered using X. laevis in the Hogben pregnancy test, and for the last 19 years has been the home of one of our community’s resource centres: the EXRC. As well as having a “frog history” the city has a massive naval heritage and we’ll be visiting the breathtaking, recovered wreck of the Tudor warship the Mary Rose for our networking event during the conference.
This year’s programme showcases the extraordinary range and depth of research powered by Xenopus. From the earliest stages of embryonic development to complex processes like organogenesis, tissue homeostasis, and regeneration, the talks and sessions reflect the power of Xenopus as a versatile model system for biological discovery. Whether you’re interested in development, cell behaviour, disease modelling, or emerging tools, there will be something here to ignite your curiosity. A special session will commemorate 20 years of X. tropicalis as a model organism, celebrating its impact and looking ahead to where it's taking us next.
The conference will start on Sunday 17th August at 12.30, on the other days it will start at 8.30 with workshops running alongside lunch, on Monday and Tuesday evenings there will be poster sessions and on Wednesday afternoon there will be a networking event at the Mary Rose Museum (https://maryrose.org/) followed by dinner and a disco. On Thursday the conference will finish at 1 pm.
Confirmed speakers include:
Yashuiro Arimura; Caroline Beck; Jerome Julian; Mustafa Khokha; Soeren Lienkamp; Rachel Miller; Brian Mitchell; Anne-Helene Monsoro-Burq; Christof Niehrs; Anna Philpott; Susannah Rankin; Lora Sweeny; John Wallingford; Helen Willsey and Aaron Zorn

For those on the near continent the easiest way may be to take the ferry, the ferryport is a 7-minute taxi ride from the University. Another possibility is Southampton Airport which is a 30-minute taxi ride away. For those coming from further away, the easiest rail access is by flying to London Gatwick Airport which has a direct train connection to Portsmouth taking about 90 minutes (see https://www.thetrainline.com/en-us). From London Heathrow Airport there is a coach service direct to the University (see https://www.nationalexpress.com/en), again the fastest takes 90 minutes, but the traffic can affect that considerably. Car parking will be difficult, please contact ixc25@port.ac.uk if it is necessary for you.
For Visa/Travel purposes, you can request a customised letter of invitation by contacting ixc25@port.ac.uk. Visit the visa and passport section of the Xenopus 2025 website for essential travel information.

We have worked hard to keep the conference affordable and hope lots of early career scientists can join. We will endeavour to support student attendance with travel grants wherever possible but will give preference to those from underrepresented countries and newly established labs.
Meeting accommodation is in ensuite student rooms (a few double rooms are available, but nearly all are single), lunch, dinner and the networking event are included in the conference price. The Hall we will use first is Rees Hall (https://www.port.ac.uk/student-life/accommodation/our-halls-of-residence/rees-hall) and accessibility details are on the website. In case people want to organise their own housing, the accommodation package is purchased separately on the online store; breakfast is part of the accommodation package. The conference runs from lunchtime to lunchtime on the 17th to the 21st August. For those needing accommodation on the 16th and/or 21st these options are also available on the online store; please note that due to the Victorious Festival starting on the 22nd anyone staying overnight on the 21st will have to leave their accommodation by 8 am.
We recommend making your housing reservation as soon as possible. A valid credit card is required to finalize your booking. If you are uncertain about your arrival/departure dates, make your best estimate—you can modify them later.
Note: The University of Portsmouth, UK is the only official housing provider for the conference. They will not contact you directly for bookings. If you choose to book elsewhere, we cannot assist with any issues. Other hotels are neither endorsed nor affiliated with the conference.
The deadline for submission is May 23rd. Abstracts must be no longer than 300 words including the title and authors’ details. Please use single spacing, no figures, Arial 10-point font and 2 cm margins.
These should be by email to ixc25@port.ac.uk before May 9th and include a presentation abstract. A case of not more than 300 words for support should be included. Preference will be given to those from newly-established labs and underrepresented countries.
Submit nominations for the IXB Young Investigator Award by June 20, 2025.
